Types of video poker machines
There are a variety of video poker machines for players to choose from but the two basic types are the 'flat top' or 'straight' machines and the 'progressives'. Flat tops offer set payoffs on all hands won, with the payoffs proportionately larger for greater amounts of coins played. In other words a winning payout for two coins played would be exactly double that of a winning hand with a single coin. The one exception is for the Royal Flush, where a winning payout will give the player a 4,000 coin return when five coins are played, as opposed to 200, 400, 600 and 800 coins on a one, two, three and four coin play respectively. All other payouts are in proportion. Generally, machines will have the payouts posted so you can see what you're up against.
Progressive video poker machines differ from the flat tops in that when a Royal Flush is hit with five coins played, the payout is not a set amount, but rather its based on a progressive amount. The jackpot continually increases until the Royal Flush is hit. Then it starts again at a set amount such as $1,000 on a 25 cent machine.
